The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF) has voiced its disappointment following the theft of valuable memorabilia dedicated to victims of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster at a memorial in Germany.
The BBC reported on Friday that the items were stolen from a glass cabinet at Manchesterplatz in Munich on Monday after it was allegedly broken with a stone.
Local police said the incident was suspected to have taken place between 08:00 and 13:00.
The memorial stands at the location of the February 6, 1958, tragedy, which killed 23 people, including eight Manchester United players, while the team was travelling home from a European Cup encounter with Red Star Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia.
The plane had made a refuelling stop in Munich before crashing during an attempted take-off.
Mark Salzmann, chairman of Red Docs Munich, disclosed that the stolen belongings included a glass sculpture initially gifted to former Munich mayor Dieter Reiter, as well as several medals.
The group, comprising Bayern Munich fans, assists in preserving the memorial by gathering tributes from football supporters worldwide and displaying some of the items in the glass cabinet.
