Meloni Breaks Record as Italy’s Longest-Serving Government Hits 1,413 Days
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is celebrating a major political milestone after her government became the longest-serving administration in the history of the Italian Republic.
Meloni’s government clocked 1,413 days in office on Friday, edging past the previous record of 1,412 days held by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second administration, which governed from 2001 to 2005.
Marking the milestone in a post on X, Meloni described the achievement as both a source of gratitude and a responsibility, stressing the importance of political stability to long-term national planning and effective governance.
The Italian prime minister highlighted what she described as key achievements of her administration, including rising employment, lower unemployment, support for families and businesses, stronger security and a more prominent international role for Italy.
Meloni credited the durability of her government to the unity of Italy’s centre-right coalition, arguing that its continued cooperation had provided the stability needed to pursue a common political programme.
She also pointed to the dominance of centre-right administrations among Italy’s longest-serving governments, saying their longevity demonstrated the importance of political alliances built around shared values, objectives and a common vision.
Meloni said the government’s record would ultimately not have been possible without Italians who voted for the coalition in the 2022 general election.
The prime minister is expected to meet supporters of her Fratelli d’Italia party in Bari, where she plans to reflect on the government’s record and outline its priorities for the period ahead.
Meloni came to power in October 2022 as Italy’s first woman prime minister and has since maintained the coalition that brought her to office, defying the political instability that has historically characterised Italian governments.
