Lagos Police Restrict Movement Ahead of July 12 Local Government Elections

The Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction on vehicular movement across the state on Saturday, July 12, 2025, as part of security measures for the upcoming local government elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, police authorities said the movement restriction will take effect from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day, and will cover all roads and waterways within Lagos State.

“This restriction will be strictly enforced across the entirety of Lagos State,” the statement read. “It applies to all forms of vehicular movement to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the electoral process.”

However, the directive exempts essential service providers, such as medical emergency personnel, officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), as well as accredited media and election observers. All exempted persons must display LASIEC-issued identification tags throughout the exercise.

Additional Security Measures Announced

To further secure the polls, the Lagos Police Command has also prohibited:

  • Armed escorts and security aides from accompanying VIPs to polling units or collation centres.
  • The use of sirens and covered number plates, especially near election venues.

Authorities say the restrictions are part of a coordinated deployment of security personnel under the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). This deployment spans all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

“The aim is to ensure a peaceful, safe, and credible election process for voters, LASIEC officials, observers, and the general public,” the statement emphasized.

Residents are advised to plan accordingly and comply with the restrictions to avoid disruptions or legal consequences.
