Labour Party Declares 2027 Presidential Ticket Open, Says No Favours for Aspirants

The Labour Party (LP) has officially declared its 2027 presidential ticket open, stressing that no individual will be given preferential treatment in the selection process.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, stated that all interested aspirants would be subjected to primary elections.

“There shall be primary elections in the Labour Party, and no aspirant will be favoured this time around,” Arabambi said.

He described the selection of Peter Obi as the party’s presidential candidate in 2023 as a “blunder with lasting consequences,” which he claimed amounted to a betrayal of Nigerians. According to Arabambi, the party is now committed to correcting its past mistakes ahead of the 2027 general election.

Peter Obi, who emerged as the Labour Party’s flag bearer in the last presidential election, came third according to the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), winning 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory.

However, Arabambi questioned Obi’s loyalty to the party following his recent alignment with a coalition movement under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he also declared his intention to contest the 2027 election.

He further dismissed the coalition’s leaders, describing them as “Yahoo Yahoo politicians” who, he alleged, were responsible for the hardships that began in 2015.
