Among those attending were UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, an adviser to the Pope, and representatives of major technology companies including Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic.
The meeting comes amid growing concern within the technology industry over the rapidly advancing capabilities of so-called frontier AI systems and the challenges of ensuring that their development remains subject to effective safeguards.
King Charles said developers themselves were increasingly raising concerns about the potential for advanced AI systems to acquire dangerous capabilities, including the possibility of being used to cause serious harm.
He stressed the need for urgent consideration of the risks associated with powerful AI technologies, particularly if they are misused or fall under the control of individuals or groups seeking to cause widespread damage.
The King urged industry leaders to look beyond technological advancement and ensure that AI remains focused on serving humanity, communities and the environment.
The summit is also examining the possibility of establishing a shared set of principles to guide the responsible development and future application of artificial intelligence.
