Katsina Governor Suspends Officials Over Torture Allegations at Reformatory Centre

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has ordered the immediate suspension of senior officials at the Katsina State Reformatory Centre, Babbar Ruga, following an investigative report into the alleged torture and mistreatment of an inmate, Usman Musa.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Faskari, those suspended include the Principal of the Centre, Abdulzahir Abubakar, the Vice Principal, Bala Abubakar, and a porter, Yunusa Yusuf, all of whom were found culpable in an incident that led to the amputation of Musa’s left hand and severe injury to his right.

The statement — signed by Abdullahi Yar’adua, Chief Press Secretary to the SSG — reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to human rights, institutional accountability, and reform.

In addition, Governor Radda approved the termination of Murtala Suleiman, a casual staff member involved in the incident.

Demonstrating a commitment to justice and rehabilitation, the Governor also approved ₦970,000 for immediate medical expenses and ₦35 million for the procurement of a sensor-enabled prosthetic hand to aid the victim’s recovery and reintegration.

Governor Radda has further directed the full implementation of recommendations from the investigative committee, including the overhaul of the reformatory centre to bring it in line with international best practices in inmate care and correctional facility management.

The investigative panel, chaired by the Special Adviser on Public Administration and Service Reforms, Usman Isiyaku, will oversee the rollout of the approved reforms and ensure strict compliance.
