Kano Assembly Member Zubairu Masu Dumps NNPP, Joins APC Amid Party Crisis

Sumaila constituency lawmaker cites internal rifts and legal battles as reasons for abandoning the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

A member of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu, representing the Sumaila constituency, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His defection was announced during Monday’s plenary session after the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore, read a resignation letter submitted by Masu, with the move taking effect from May 12, 2025.

In the letter, Masu cited persistent internal strife and unending leadership crises within the NNPP as his main reasons for leaving the party. He expressed dismay over the ongoing legal battles and factional rivalries that have eroded party cohesion at both state and national levels.

“There is no clear leadership in the NNPP anymore. Different individuals continue to lay claim to the same offices, creating confusion and division,” Masu wrote.

At the state level, he highlighted the struggle between Dr. Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa and Senator Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa as rival faction leaders. At the national level, Dr. Ahmed Ajuji and Dr. Agbo Major are reportedly engaged in a similar power tussle over the party’s chairmanship — developments he says have led to prolonged court cases and uncertainty within the party.

Masu pledged his loyalty to the APC and its leadership at all levels, declaring his commitment to working with the party to deliver on its mandate to the people of Kano State.

His departure marks another setback for the NNPP, which has faced mounting internal divisions since its rise as a major political force in the 2023 elections.
