Iran Seizes Foreign Tanker in Sea of Oman Over Alleged Fuel Smuggling

Iranian authorities have seized a foreign oil tanker in the Sea of Oman on suspicion of fuel smuggling, the country’s judiciary announced Wednesday, in the latest maritime incident amid ongoing regional tensions.

The vessel was detained after officials found its cargo documentation to be “incomplete,” said Mojtaba Ghahremani, head of the judiciary in southern Hormozgan province, as quoted by the judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan Online.

According to Ghahremani, the ship was reportedly carrying two million litres of smuggled fuel, and 17 individuals—including the ship’s captain and crew—have been taken into custody. He did not provide details on the vessel’s nationality or the identities of those detained.

Authorities are said to be conducting lab tests and document reviews to confirm the cargo’s nature and determine whether the shipment violated Iranian law.

The incident echoes previous seizures in the region. In a similar case earlier this year, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intercepted two Tanzanian-flagged vessels—the Sea Ranger and Salama—for allegedly transporting 1.5 million litres of diesel.

Those ships were later transferred to the port of Bushehr for legal proceedings. Iranian media reported they had 25 foreign crew members on board.

Fuel smuggling remains a persistent issue in Iran, where state subsidies keep domestic fuel prices among the lowest globally, creating incentives for illicit exports by sea to neighboring countries.

Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters have drawn scrutiny in recent years, particularly amid geopolitical tensions with Western nations and regional rivals. While the country says it is enforcing its sovereignty and combating smuggling, critics argue such seizures add to instability in key international shipping lanes.
