Iran has executed a man convicted of spying for Israel, marking the latest execution linked to espionage allegations following the June conflict between the two longtime adversaries, according to Iran’s judiciary.
In a statement released on Saturday, the judiciary’s official news agency, Mizan, said the death sentence against Aghil Keshavarz was carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court and completed in accordance with Iran’s legal procedures.
Keshavarz was found guilty of spying for what Iranian authorities refer to as the “Zionist regime,” as well as communicating and cooperating with Israel and photographing sensitive military and security installations.
The judiciary described him as an agent of Israel’s Mossad foreign intelligence service, adding that he was arrested between April and May in Urmia, a city in northwestern Iran.
The execution comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv and follows a series of similar cases announced by Iranian authorities in recent months.
