As part of heightened security measures ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has deployed 3,000 personnel across Abuja.
The deployment, authorised by the FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, is aimed at strengthening security operations, maintaining public order and safeguarding lives and property throughout the celebration period.
The security operation covers strategic locations and areas identified as vulnerable to criminal activities, including shopping malls, markets, motor parks, amusement and recreational centres, as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure across the nation’s capital.
Personnel from various specialised units of the Corps have been mobilised for the operation, including the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Explosives Unit, as well as the Counter-Terrorism Unit.
The Command has also activated its undercover operatives to conduct discreet surveillance and gather intelligence, with particular attention on locations suspected to be hideouts for criminal elements.
Uncompleted buildings and other identified black spots across the FCT are also under surveillance as the Corps intensifies efforts to prevent criminal activities and possible security breaches during the celebrations.
Area Commanders and Divisional Officers have been directed to maintain a visible operational presence within their respective Area Councils and ensure that personnel remain vigilant throughout the anniversary period.
The officers have also been instructed to uphold discipline, coordinate effectively with other security agencies and operate in line with established rules of engagement.
The Command has further cautioned personnel against actions that could intimidate or harass members of the public, while stressing the need for strict safety measures to prevent accidental discharge during operations.
Beyond the deployment of personnel, the NSCDC says intelligence-driven surveillance and other preventive security measures are already in place across the FCT ahead of the anniversary.
Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly alert security agencies to suspicious persons, movements or activities that could pose a threat to public safety.
The Command has also warned criminals and vandals against attacking Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, noting that patrol teams and undercover operatives are already monitoring vulnerable locations across the capital.
The NSCDC assured residents that security operations would remain active before, during and after the Independence Anniversary celebrations as part of efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration in the FCT.
