Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma has officially sworn in Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu as the Acting Chief Judge of Imo State, alongside two new Commissioners Bernard Ikegwuoha and Chioma Egu.
The swearing-in of Justice Nzeukwu comes months after the removal of the former Chief Judge, Theresa Chikeka, who was indicted for age falsification by the National Judicial Council (NJC). During the ceremony at the Government House in Owerri, Governor Uzodimma reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring a responsible and dependable judiciary in Imo State.
Addressing the issue surrounding the previous Chief Judge’s removal, the governor explained that it had led to a thorough review process involving the state government and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to ensure the integrity of judicial appointments. Justice Nzeukwu’s appointment was made following this detailed review and in line with the Nigerian Constitution. The governor also tasked the JSC with expediting the process of appointing a substantive Chief Judge for the state.
Governor Uzodimma urged all judicial officers to act with integrity, fairness, and commitment to justice, stressing the sacredness of their mandate. He also called on the new Acting Chief Judge to work towards restoring dignity to the judiciary in the state and expressed his hopes for divine guidance in this important role.
In his acceptance speech, Justice Nzeukwu thanked the governor and the JSC for entrusting him with the position and promised to restore credibility and accountability within the judiciary. He declared that the “era of business as usual is over,” pledging to rebuild public confidence in the judiciary.
The new Acting Chief Judge also called on judicial staff to remain patient, resist undue influence, and maintain professionalism as they work together to elevate the judiciary.
On behalf of the new Commissioners, Bernard Ikegwuoha expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and assured the governor that they would work diligently to meet the administration’s objectives.
