Health Minister orders reform at Abuja hospital after viral neglect incident

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, has ordered immediate reforms in the emergency care services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja.

The directive was issued during the Minister’s unscheduled visit to the hospital on Sunday, following public outrage over a viral video that captured delayed medical attention to accident victims at the facility’s emergency unit.

Mr Salako also revealed that the federal government is set to roll out a nationwide emergency care training programme. The initiative aims to standardise and enhance emergency response procedures across public healthcare institutions.

The government had earlier launched an investigation into the incident depicted in the viral video. The footage shows victims of a road accident allegedly left unattended after being brought in by a good Samaritan. According to the narrator in the video, hospital staff initially refused to provide urgent care, reportedly citing a shortage of gloves.

However, the video later shows some hospital personnel assisting one of the severely injured victims into the emergency ward, while others were seen walking in without help.
