Five Transmission Towers Collapse on Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV Line After Vandalism

Five transmission towers along the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line have collapsed following extensive vandalism, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said.
TCN disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, following the discovery of the damage during a routine joint patrol by its linesmen on August 9, 2026.
According to the company, critical structural bracing members were removed from several towers, compromising the integrity of the transmission line and resulting in the collapse of five towers.
The affected structures include Towers N9, N10, N11, N12, N13 and N15, although TCN said five of the towers had collapsed.
Further inspection of the transmission corridor revealed that structural members had also been removed and stolen from seven additional towers.
TCN warned that the affected towers are now structurally compromised and could collapse if urgent remedial action is not taken.
To minimise the impact of the damage on electricity supply, the transmission network has been reconfigured to prioritise electricity supply from Ibom Power.
The company said its management was mobilising an urgent intervention to reconstruct the damaged sections of the line and restore the integrity of the transmission corridor.
TCN also said security agencies had been notified to support investigations into the vandalism and prevent further attacks on transmission infrastructure along the route.
The company condemned the incident as an act of sabotage and reiterated its commitment to maintaining a robust and reliable national electricity grid.
