FIFA Investigates Alleged Racial Abuse of Rüdiger During Club World Cup Match

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that FIFA has launched an investigation into allegations that Antonio Rüdiger was subjected to racial abuse by Gustavo Cabral during their 3-1 victory over Pachuca in the Club World Cup on Sunday.
The alleged incident occurred five minutes into stoppage time, following a heated exchange between Rüdiger and several Pachuca players after he was fouled. Referee Ramon Abatti, after speaking with the Madrid defender, signaled the anti-racism protocol by crossing his hands over his chest.
Alonso has stated that Real Madrid fully supports the 32-year-old German international.
“That’s what Rüdiger said, and we believe him,” Alonso said. “It is important to have zero tolerance in these kinds of situations. FIFA now is investigating. That’s all I can say.”
In response, Cabral denied the allegation, claiming after the match that he had called Rüdiger “chickens,” not using any racially offensive language. FIFA is expected to officially commence its inquiry upon receiving the referee’s match report.
