FG Hikes Nigerian Passport Fees to ₦100,000 and ₦200,000, Effective Sept 1

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has announced a sharp upward review of passport application fees, with the new charges set to take effect on September 1, 2025.

In a statement issued Thursday, NIS spokesperson ACI AS Akinlabi clarified that the revised fees apply strictly to applications made within Nigeria, while charges for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged.

Under the new structure: 32-page passport (5-year validity): ₦100,000 (up from ₦50,000)

64-page passport (10-year validity): ₦200,000 (up from ₦100,000)

For Nigerians abroad, the rates stay at $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page option.

According to the Service, the adjustment is designed to safeguard the quality, security features, and integrity of the Nigerian passport, while also ensuring accessibility to citizens.

This latest hike comes less than a year after the last review in August 2024, when the government raised the 32-page passport fee from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000 and doubled the cost of the 64-page, 10-year validity passport from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.

The announcement is already sparking public debate, with many questioning the affordability of the new rates in light of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
