The Federal Government has announced that the Kaduna–Kano Standard Gauge Rail Line is on track for completion by 2026, reinforcing its commitment to upgrading Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared the update via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, highlighting the government’s ongoing infrastructure development efforts.
Echoing this progress, Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, revealed that the rail project has made substantial strides under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. When President Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, the project was only 15% complete. Since then, the completion rate has surged to 53%.
Alkali also confirmed that a crucial funding boost has been secured through a bilateral agreement with the Government of China, aimed at accelerating the pace of construction.
The injection of funds is expected to fast-track the remaining work, ensuring the project meets its scheduled delivery.
Stretching over 203 kilometers, the Kaduna–Kano railway is a modern standard-gauge line that will ultimately link Kano directly to Abuja, enhancing regional connectivity.
In January 2025, the China Development Bank (CDB) approved a €245 million ($254.76 million) loan to support the railway’s construction. The bank emphasized that this financial backing is crucial for the project’s smooth continuation.
“The railway will not only enhance transportation but also stimulate industrial growth along the corridor,” the CDB stated. “Its construction and operation will generate significant employment opportunities within Nigeria.”
The project is part of the cooperation framework under the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is leading the construction efforts, with financial backing from the CDB. Looking ahead, the bank committed to working closely with Nigerian authorities to manage loan disbursements and ensure the timely completion of the railway.
