The Network for Health Equity and Development (NHED) has launched a nationwide campaign to mark World Salt Awareness Week 2025, calling for immediate policy reforms to tackle the health risks associated with excessive salt consumption in Nigeria.
Themed “6 Ways to 6 Grams,” the campaign promotes simple, practical steps Nigerians can take to reduce their daily salt intake to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended limit of six grams per day.
Observed from May 12 to 18, the awareness week was used as a platform by NHED to intensify its advocacy for mandatory sodium reduction targets and the introduction of Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPWL) on processed and packaged foods. According to the organisation, these two key policies are essential in lowering the country’s growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and stroke.
“Reducing salt intake isn’t just about individual choices it’s a public health priority that requires strong policy action,” said Dr. Jerome Mafeni, Project Director at NHED. “Mandatory sodium limits and clear food warning labels can transform the food landscape, help consumers make informed decisions, and ultimately save lives.”
Nigeria’s salt consumption far exceeds global health recommendations, driven by high usage of bouillon cubes, processed foods, and salt-heavy street meals. NHED, a leading voice behind the Coalition for Healthy Food Advocacy, has consistently pushed for accountability from the food industry over the excessive sodium content in commonly consumed products.
To drive the message home, NHED organised a range of educational and advocacy activities throughout the week, including:
A social media challenge encouraging Nigerians to share “6 ways” they are reducing salt in their daily diets
Media campaigns focused on the dangers of high sodium intake and the need for better food labeling
Policy dialogues with stakeholders and decision-makers to accelerate implementation of salt reduction and labelling policies
Community outreach programmes and digital awareness campaigns targeting diverse audiences across the country
NHED has called on health advocates, media professionals, policymakers, and community leaders to join forces in advocating for stronger regulations that prioritise public health and create a safer food environment for all Nigerians.
