Estonia Parliament Set To Elect As New President With Ulle Madise As Sole Candidate
Estonia’s parliament is preparing to vote on a new head of state, with Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the only candidate.
Madise, 51, was nominated by 75 lawmakers from the governing Reform Party and Eesti 200, as well as opposition Social Democrats and Isamaa.
She has served as Chancellor of Justice since 2015, overseeing constitutional and legal compliance by the government and other public institutions.
A two-thirds majority, or 68 of the 101 members of the Riigikogu, is required to win the presidency.
Incumbent President Alar Karis has opted not to seek a second term.
If Madise fails to secure the required votes on Wednesday, lawmakers will hold another ballot on Thursday, with new candidates allowed to enter the race.
A third round could follow, pitting the two leading candidates against each other.
If parliament still fails to elect a president, an electoral college will be convened within one month to choose Estonia’s next president.
