Edo PDP Acknowledges Supreme Court Verdict, Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy

Party says it accepts the judgment with “grace and dignity” but insists the journey toward true democracy in Nigeria is far from over.

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has responded to the Supreme Court judgment affirming Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory in the September 2, 2024 governorship election, saying it accepts the ruling with “grace and dignity” but also with mixed feelings.

In a statement issued Thursday in Benin City and signed by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, the party emphasized its belief in the rule of law and democratic processes. While acknowledging that the verdict did not go in their favor, Aziegbemi noted that the PDP remained hopeful and committed to the pursuit of justice and good governance.

“We have come to the end of a long legal journey, culminating in the judgment of the Supreme Court. As a party that believes in the rule of law and the democratic process, we have received the decision of the court with the utmost respect,” Aziegbemi stated. He added, “Though the judgment did not go in our favor, we accept it with grace and dignity.”

The PDP, however, expressed concern over the broader implications of the ruling, asserting that democracy in Nigeria remains a “work in progress.” Aziegbemi pointed out that while the judiciary has had its say, the ultimate verdict rests with “the Supreme God,” who he said knows the true desires of Edo people.

He also reminded Nigerians that the nation’s democratic journey is still evolving, and that the recent ruling is a marker of how far the country has come—and how much further it must go. “We remain hopeful that one day soon, our democratic institutions will fully reflect the genuine will of the people, without fear, favor, or manipulation,” he said.

Addressing supporters, Aziegbemi expressed deep gratitude to the people of Edo State for their resilience, trust, and courage. He assured them that the party’s fight for justice, development, and progressive change will continue. “This is not the end. This is only another chapter in our shared journey toward a better Edo State and a better Nigeria,” he said.

The party pledged to remain a platform for advocacy, equity, and empowerment, saying it will continue to stand as a voice for the voiceless and a shield for the vulnerable.
