Desola Afod Retracts Warning to Yoruba Actors After Backlash

Desola Afod, former wife of filmmaker Kunle Afod, has withdrawn her blanket warning to Yoruba film practitioners following criticism from members of the industry.

The controversy began after Desola accused some practitioners of disrespecting her, claiming that several actors called her name without according her the respect she expected.

Her comments drew reactions from fellow actors, including Wumi Toriola, who questioned why she had criticised the wider industry instead of identifying the individuals she accused of mistreating her.

Wumi also advised Desola to stop using the Afod surname if it was associated with the disrespect she complained about, noting that she was no longer married to the filmmaker.

Amid the backlash, Desola took to Instagram to clarify her earlier remarks and retract the generalisation.

“Whatever statement I made generally concerning ‘Àwọn ọmọ Tíátíà’, I hereby retract and take it back. I don’t mean to generalise or refer to everyone in the industry. The few people that did me dirty know themselves,” she wrote.

However, she stood by her decision to retain the Afod name while responding to Wumi’s comments about her former marriage.

“One thing remains unchanged: MY NAME IS STILL DESOLA AFOD, CELEB WIFE, TILL THE END OF TIME 100,” she stated.

Desola’s retraction comes after her initial comments triggered a public exchange among Yoruba film practitioners over respect, personal grievances and how disputes within the industry should be addressed.
