Court Upholds Nenadi Usman–Led Caretaker Committee as Labour Party Leadership, Orders INEC Recognition

The Federal High Court in Abuja has upheld the removal of Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the party’s lawful leadership.

The ruling was disclosed by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who was present in court when Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgment on Wednesday. Effiong shared the development on X, confirming that the court affirmed the Usman-led committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the party, noting that Abure’s tenure had long elapsed in accordance with a prior Supreme Court judgment.

In his post, Effiong wrote: “I am currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja for a case and listened to judgment delivered in another matter. Honourable Justice Lifu has just upheld Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the Labour Party.

The judge reaffirmed that by the Supreme Court’s ruling, Julius Abure’s tenure had since elapsed and ordered INEC to recognize Nenadi Usman forthwith.”

The court’s decision effectively settles the leadership dispute within the Labour Party, strengthening the authority of the Usman-led committee ahead of upcoming political activities and party elections.
