Chinese Embassy Denies Abuse of Nigerian Workers in Central African Republic

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has issued a cautious response to allegations made by 12 Nigerian workers recently rescued from the Central African Republic (CAR). The workers accused their Chinese employers of sexual abuse and non-payment of salaries.

These allegations emerged after the workers returned to Nigeria last week, sharing harrowing accounts of abuse, starvation, and withheld wages while working for Chinese mining companies in CAR.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), which received the workers in Abuja, has pledged to seek justice on their behalf. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy stated that the outcome of ongoing investigations will guide any further actions.

In a statement, the embassy said, “We have noted the relevant reports and attach great importance to this matter. We will immediately commence an investigation. Until the investigation results are released, we request that the information not be disseminated or cited.

“The Chinese Government consistently requires all Chinese citizens abroad to comply with the laws and regulations of their host countries and conduct business activities in accordance with all applicable rules and requirements.”

While emphasizing that the allegations are being taken seriously, the embassy reaffirmed its commitment to due process throughout the investigation.
