Two people have been killed and 10 others injured after a car struck a group of pedestrians near a train station in Caen, northern France, prompting a major emergency response across the Normandy region.
French authorities said the vehicle deliberately drove into pedestrians near the station. Seven of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, according to local officials.
Police later arrested a 26-year-old man, reportedly born in Russia, in the nearby port town of Ouistreham, about 20 kilometres from Caen. Authorities said the suspect’s vehicle was traced using the city’s CCTV network.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Witnesses reportedly said a confrontation between two groups had occurred shortly before the vehicle struck the crowd.
Security officials said there was no immediate indication of a terrorist motive, although investigators were still working to establish what prompted the attack.
All of the victims were reportedly male, aged between 17 and 40, according to French authorities. The incident has triggered heightened security measures as investigators examine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
