Canada Returnee Arrested in Lagos for Assaulting Environmental Officer During Crackdown

Lagos State enforces strict sanitation laws as 34 suspects are arrested in Ojota, Isokoko, and Agege for environmental offenses.

The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a 52-year-old Canadian returnee, Mr. Morufudeen Idowu, for allegedly assaulting an official of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (popularly known as KAI) during a routine enforcement operation in Ojota.

According to Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, the incident occurred after Idowu reportedly resisted arrest for crossing the expressway unlawfully. He was apprehended and taken into custody at the KAI office in Oshodi and is expected to face legal action under existing Lagos State laws.

The arrest is part of a wider crackdown by state environmental officials targeting illegal sanitation practices. In a separate operation at dawn around Isokoko near the railway line, 23 individuals were caught dumping refuse directly into drainage channels—an act the government warns contributes heavily to flooding in the city.

Enforcement efforts also led to the arrest of two suspects for open defecation along Agege Motor Road and eight others for public urination in high-traffic areas such as Allen, Opebi, and Governor’s Road in Alausa.

Commissioner Wahab praised residents who provided tip-offs and reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental violations. “All suspects will be prosecuted according to the environmental laws of Lagos,” he said.
