Broadband coverage expansion: FEC approves NIGCOMSAT-2A, 2B for wider connectivity
The Federal Executive Council (FEC), has approved the acquisition and deployment of two new communication satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, to expand broadband access and improve critical communications across Nigeria.
The satellites, to be deployed by the Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited, NIGCOMSAT, are expected to extend connectivity to underserved and hard-to-reach communities. They will complement existing terrestrial networks, particularly in areas where conventional broadband infrastructure is difficult or expensive to deploy.
The additional capacity is also expected to support digital services in education, healthcare, agriculture, financial services, broadcasting and government operations.
NIGCOMSAT said the project would strengthen national communications resilience and expand the country’s capacity to provide satellite-enabled services.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, described the approval as a major milestone for the agency and the country.
She said the satellites would increase Nigeria’s satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications nationwide.
The project is being implemented by NIGCOMSAT under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
The satellites are also expected to enhance secure communications for national security and defence while reducing reliance on foreign satellite infrastructure.
