AY Apologises to Cardiff Fans, Promises Free Return Show

Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has apologised to fans disappointed by the controversy surrounding his comedy show in Cardiff, Wales, and announced plans to stage a free return performance.

In a lengthy statement shared on Instagram, AY addressed the backlash and calls for him to be cancelled, saying he was hurt that one difficult night could overshadow more than two decades of entertaining audiences.

The comedian said some industry figures had advised him to remain silent until the controversy subsided. However, he explained that he owed an explanation to fans who had paid to attend the show.

AY attributed his decision to repeated frustrations during his tour, including what he described as broken payment promises. He also recalled driving for five hours from Sheffield to Cardiff before reaching what he called his limit.

“For years, I have performed despite broken payment promises, sometimes paying colleagues from my own pocket. After repeated experiences on this tour and a five-hour drive from Sheffield to Cardiff, I reached my limit,” he said.

Despite explaining the circumstances behind his decision, AY acknowledged that the fans who turned up for the event were not responsible for the situation.

“But the fans waiting had done nothing wrong. For your disappointment, wasted time and the upset you experienced, I am sincerely sorry,” he stated.

The comedian urged the public to watch his video explaining his side of the incident, adding that people were entitled to disagree with his actions but should also consider his account.

He also questioned the attention given to negative reports about him, saying he wished similar interest were shown in his consistency, achievements and years of work.

AY maintained that calls for his cancellation would not make him abandon the career and brand he had built. He said he would learn from the incident and continue working, while respecting the right of people to decide whether to support his shows.

As part of his efforts to make amends, the comedian announced plans to return to Cardiff for a free show at his own expense. He clarified that the performance would depend on venue availability and other arrangements and would not replace any refunds owed to attendees of the original event.

AY thanked those who had supported him or offered constructive criticism, expressing confidence that he would continue entertaining audiences despite the controversy.
