Atiku Proposes One-Term Presidency, Obi as Running Mate

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly offered Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi the position of vice president under a proposed one-term presidency deal ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to a report by The PUNCH, sources close to both camps confirmed that the proposal was discussed during a private meeting held earlier this year in the United Kingdom.

The deal allegedly includes a commitment from Atiku to serve only a single four-year term if elected, after which he would hand over power to Obi.

While Obi has reportedly accepted the offer “in principle,” he is said to be holding consultations with his political allies and stakeholders before making any public commitment.

The proposal signals a possible revival of their 2019 PDP ticket, which lost to former President Muhammadu Buhari. Momentum for an opposition coalition has since grown, with Atiku, Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and others meeting in March to discuss a united front against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

An insider emphasized that the opposition’s best chance rests on an Atiku-Obi alliance, with formal agreements potentially in the works.

Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, confirmed the coalition talks but declined to comment on the VP deal. Obi’s associates offered mixed responses—some declined to confirm, while others said they were unaware of any such arrangement.

Meanwhile, ADC Chairman Ralph Nwosu revealed ongoing coalition talks across party lines, including with some APC members, and hinted at a major political announcement soon.

If the Atiku-Obi deal solidifies, it could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape and unify a fragmented opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
