A new effort to strengthen HIV awareness and prevention among students is taking shape in Anambra State, with 27 tertiary institutions joining a campus-based response programme.
The Campus Action Committee on AIDS was launched in Awka alongside the inauguration of institutional HIV focal persons, bringing students and lecturers together to promote prevention, awareness and support services.
ANSACA Executive Director, Dr. Nkem Okeke, said the agency would provide structured training and visit participating institutions to ensure activities meet professional and ethical standards.
Each institution will have a lecturer and student representative, while broader campus committees will include students from different departments and academic levels.
The initiative adds a campus-level structure to Anambra’s existing HIV response framework, complementing efforts at the national, state, local government and ward levels.
Dr. Okeke commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the programme, describing the renewed commitment as important to expanding public health interventions.
Project Chairman, Emeka Nwabunwanne, urged the newly appointed focal persons to serve as the foundation of ANSACA’s HIV response within their respective institutions.
