In a major political shift, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at a press conference in Uyo on Friday, Governor Eno declared that after extensive consultations across the state, he had made the decision to join the ruling party in order to align with the economic vision of President Bola Tinubu.
“Having completed the rounds of my consultations as your servant, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he said.
The governor emphasized that his defection was not born out of desperation or political weakness.
“We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness,” he stated. “We are joining the APC from a position of strength — to contribute meaningfully to the progress of Nigeria and support the bold economic reforms of President Tinubu.”
Governor Eno’s move marks a significant realignment in the South-South political landscape and follows a growing trend of defections by PDP governors. His decision comes just six weeks after Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made a similar switch to the APC, signaling deeper fractures within the opposition party.
The APC leadership is expected to formally receive Governor Eno at a high-profile ceremony in Abuja in the coming days.
Political analysts say the defection could reshape the balance of power in Akwa Ibom ahead of future elections and consolidate APC’s influence in the Niger Delta.
