The African Democratic Congress has criticised what it described as President Bola Tinubu’s recent political rhetoric, linking it to controversial comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
Speaking on Arise News on Wednesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, argued that Fadahunsi may have interpreted the President’s statement that “all is fair in politics” as approval for political actors to do whatever is necessary to secure electoral victory.
Abdullahi said political statements from senior leaders could influence how their supporters perceive the boundaries of acceptable behaviour during elections.
Fadahunsi was recently questioned by the Osun State Police Command over remarks made at an APC campaign rally in Ilesa, which were interpreted as encouraging supporters to attack members of the Accord Party.
Meanwhile, Abdullahi expressed confidence that the ADC could emerge victorious in Saturday’s election if the process is conducted transparently.
The party’s candidate, Najeem Salaam, is challenging incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke and APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, among others.
Abdullahi also criticised the deployment of heavily armed security personnel across Osun ahead of the poll, describing it as the “militarisation” of the state’s political space and expressing concern that it could undermine the credibility of the election.
