Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced that the upcoming 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named after renowned afrobeats artist, Rema.
This decision was revealed during the groundbreaking ceremony for the arena, which took place in Benin City on Wednesday.
The announcement was made as Rema, who was in Benin City for his homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium, joined the governor at the groundbreaking event. Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, laid the first block for the construction of what will be known as “Rema’s Dome.” The arena is situated on the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.
Governor Obaseki expressed his enthusiasm about the project, noting that the arena will serve as a versatile venue for various events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings.
He emphasized that the completion of the Edo Arena will not only enhance the state’s cultural offerings but also attract more visitors, thereby creating employment opportunities for local youths.
Rema, a native of Benin City, has been a significant cultural ambassador for Edo State. His latest song, “Benin Boys,” a collaboration with fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, is a tribute to his hometown and its rich heritage.
