Yul Edochie Insists Polygamy Is Not a Sin, Cites Biblical Examples
Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has renewed his defence of polygamy, insisting that having multiple wives is not a sin and arguing that the practice has examples in the Bible.
Edochie made the assertion in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, continuing his public support for polygamy following his announcement in 2022 that he had married actress Judy Austin as his second wife.
In the post, the actor cited biblical figures who had multiple wives, arguing that God did not condemn them for doing so.
“POLYGAMY IS NOT A SIN. Even in the bible, many great men there had many wives and God never had issues with them. He was even willing to give them more,” he wrote.
Edochie also suggested that some men are naturally inclined to have multiple wives but choose monogamy because they fear criticism from society.
“Today, many men are destined to have many wives but because they don’t know who they are and scared of what society will say they end up having just one and life doesn’t seem to be working for them,” he added.
His comments have attracted mixed reactions online, with some social media users criticising his position while others expressed support.
Polygamy debate draws renewed attention
Edochie has remained a prominent figure in public discussions about polygamy since April 2022, when he announced his marriage to Austin as his second wife. The announcement sparked widespread controversy and intensified public scrutiny of his relationship with his first wife, May Edochie.
The debate has also resurfaced following comments by US-based pastor Israel Ford of LifeWorks Church in Wickliffe, Ohio, who announced on Sunday, October 25, that he had married a second wife.
Ford reportedly introduced Minister Shakayla Ford as his second wife during a church service attended by his first wife, Prophetess Lydia Ford. He also argued that treating monogamy as the only acceptable form of marriage was inconsistent with the Bible.
“As a nation we have been taught that a man should have one wife only. This is unbiblical,” Ford wrote on Facebook.
The statements by both men have brought renewed attention to differing views on marriage, religious teachings and the acceptance of polygamy in contemporary society.
