Rivers State Assembly Passes 2026 Budget, Fubara Assents

The Rivers State Government has moved closer to implementing its 2026 fiscal plan after Governor Siminalayi Fubara signed the state’s Appropriation Bill into law.

The signing followed the unanimous passage of the bill by the 26-member Rivers State House of Assembly during its resumed sitting in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

The lawmakers subsequently transmitted the bill to Governor Fubara for assent at the Government House.

According to the Assembly, the approved budget will cover the fiscal year ending on September 2, 2027. The development follows delays in the consideration and passage of the budget by the State Assembly.

Governor Fubara had earlier submitted the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, to the Assembly on June 25 as part of the state’s budget preparation process.

With the governor’s assent, the state can now proceed with the implementation of programmes and projects captured in the 2026 fiscal plan.

The budget is also the first to be approved by the Assembly under the leadership of its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, since the beginning of the current administration.

Governor Fubara is expected to ensure that the approved provisions are implemented in line with the state government’s priorities for the fiscal year.
