Nigerian Security forces have arrested a suspected member of the Lakurawa terrorist group in connection with the deadly attack on worshippers in Dekara, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended over the attack, which occurred on August 21 when armed men invaded communities in the Borgu axis, including Dekara, Gidan-Zana and Kpenya, during Friday prayers.
The assault resulted in the abduction of scores of worshippers, with local authorities later reporting that dozens were taken away. Reports also indicated that several people were killed during the attacks, although casualty figures have varied.
The incident triggered widespread concern across Borgu, particularly after reports and images emerged showing some of the abducted victims being held in a forested area.
Niger State authorities have previously said the attackers were suspected to be members of Lakurawa and Boko Haram, while security agencies launched operations to locate the abducted worshippers and track down those responsible.
The latest arrest could provide security agencies with vital intelligence on the attackers, their networks and the location of victims still being held captive.
