The Donald Trump administration has temporarily paused immigrant visa appointments at US embassies and consulates worldwide, adding to a series of measures tightening the country’s immigration system.
The US State Department said the disruption was linked to a global training initiative for consular officers aimed at strengthening visa screening and ensuring more consistent assessments of applicants. Appointments will be adjusted to accommodate the training, with affected applicants expected to have their interviews rescheduled.
The development comes as the Trump administration intensifies its immigration enforcement efforts, including visa and green-card revocations and tougher scrutiny of applications.
The administration has also expanded screening of applicants’ backgrounds and activities, including scrutiny of political views and participation in protests, particularly those involving the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Trump has defended the broader immigration crackdown as necessary to protect national security and strengthen enforcement of US immigration laws.
The latest pause follows a series of legal and policy battles over the administration’s immigration measures. On Friday, a US federal judge struck down a policy introduced earlier this year that suspended immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries.
The court ruled that the administration had exceeded Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statutory authority by imposing a blanket suspension based on applicants’ nationalities.
Despite the ruling, the administration has continued to tighten visa processing and screening requirements, creating uncertainty for applicants seeking to relocate permanently to the United States.
The State Department has not announced a definitive date for the full resumption of the affected appointments, leaving applicants worldwide awaiting further guidance from US diplomatic missions.
The pause also comes amid wider changes to US visa services, including the restructuring of some visa operations and the introduction of additional screening procedures at American diplomatic posts.
