Falconets Draw Spain, China, New Caledonia in Tough 2026 U-20 Women’s World Cup Group

Seven-time African champions face defending champions Spain as Nigeria target a strong run in Poland after extending their perfect qualification record…..

Nigeria’s Falconets have been handed a challenging Group F draw at the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, where they will face Spain, China and debutants New Caledonia in the group stage of the tournament set to hold in Poland.

The draw, conducted on Thursday in Łódź, placed Nigeria against reigning champions Spain in what is expected to be the toughest fixture in the group. Spain, who lifted the title in 2022 in Costa Rica, are widely regarded as one of the strongest sides in women’s youth football, known for their technical precision and possession-based style.

China also present a major hurdle for the African giants. With a long-standing tradition in women’s football and consistent appearances at youth and senior global tournaments, the Asian side brings experience and discipline to the group.

New Caledonia, meanwhile, will be making their first-ever appearance at the competition, adding an unknown element to the group’s dynamics.

Nigeria booked their place at the tournament after a tense qualification playoff against Malawi. The Falconets secured a 2–0 advantage in the first leg but were made to fight in the return fixture, where Malawi’s Chinzimu scored twice to level the aggregate score before Nigeria eventually held on to progress.

The Falconets remain one of the most consistent teams in the competition’s history, having qualified for every edition since its inception in 2002 alongside the United States and Brazil.

Despite their consistency, Nigeria are still chasing a maiden title, having reached the final twice in 2010 and 2014, only to fall short on both occasions.

The 2026 edition, the 12th in the tournament’s history, will run from September 5 to 27 in Poland, bringing together the world’s best youth women’s teams in a month-long battle for global supremacy.
