Abuja Set to Host Crown Elite Basketball All-Star Weekend Featuring West Africa’s Finest

Abuja is set to welcome the Crown Elite Basketball All-Star Weekend from August 22 to 24, a major sporting event that will gather some of West Africa’s top basketball clubs at the Mo Arena Sports Hall. Among the featured teams are Nigerian University Games champions Nile University and premier league contenders Gboko City Chiefs.

This highly anticipated three-day spectacle marks Crown Elite Sports’ debut in Nigeria’s capital city, building on over 12 years of successful basketball programming across the region. Organisers are billing it as a landmark event designed to unite elite talent from across the continent.

“We are truly excited to bring the Crown Elite All-Star event to Nigeria’s vibrant capital city, Abuja,” said Hanson Oguche, president and founder of Crown Elite Sports. “This edition promises to be thrilling, as it not only celebrates the heart of basketball in our nation but also emphasises the importance of education among athletes.”

The festivities will begin on August 22 with a series of exhibition games featuring six top clubs, including Mo Heat Basketball Club, Royal Aces Basketball Club, and Air Warriors Basketball Club. The Hotcoal Basketball Foundation is supporting the event as a major sponsor.

The main All-Star matches, scheduled for August 23, will see a clash between the Sahel Conference Co-Ed Select Team and the Oceanic Conference team. The Sahel team will be led by Hamza Abubakar of Nile University, while the Oceanic squad will be coached by Ogoh Odaudu — 2024 NBA Basketball Africa League Coach of the Year, current National Team Coach, and head coach of Rivers Hoopers.

Adding to the day’s excitement will be a legends exhibition match featuring ABU Kings Alumni against a Rest of World Veterans Select Team.

Dr. Ubong Udo, founder of Hotcoal Basketball Foundation, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating it is a valuable opportunity to empower athletes and uplift the sport.

The All-Star Weekend will culminate on August 24 with an exclusive, invitation-only VIP Awards Presentation, honouring standout players, coaches, technical officials, and key stakeholders in Nigerian basketball.

Crowd-pleasing contests, including slam dunk and three-point shooting challenges, will round out the weekend, adding a layer of fan entertainment to a championship aiming to become the premier showcase for Africa’s basketball talent.

Founded by former international player Hanson Oguche, Crown Elite Sports is dedicated to unlocking the potential of young and professional athletes through championship events, developmental programmes, and educational initiatives.
