Tensions Rise in Lagos APC as Members Demand Removal of Party Chairman

In a dramatic turn of events, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos staged a protest on Monday outside the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling for the immediate removal of the party’s state chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi.

The protesters—allegedly drawn from all 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs)—marched with bold placards bearing messages such as “Ojelabi Must Go” and “We Demand Fresh Leadership”. Their presence underscored deepening internal dissatisfaction within the party’s ranks, signaling possible fractures ahead of future elections.

Unlike traditional internal grievances typically handled behind closed doors, this public display highlights a growing culture of accountability being demanded at the grassroots level. While the national APC leadership has not yet responded, the visibility of this protest may force action sooner rather than later.

Security operatives, including heavily armed police officers, were quickly deployed to maintain order around the Assembly complex, ensuring the demonstration remained peaceful. Despite the tension, no violence or arrests had been reported as of press time.

In contrast to other media reports that briefly mentioned the protest, this development reflects broader concerns about leadership and representation within Nigeria’s ruling party.

As similar episodes have unfolded in other states—though often less visibly—Lagos, as a political and economic hub, may now serve as a litmus test for internal party democracy in the APC.
