Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a stern warning that anyone who assaults officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will face prosecution and possible imprisonment.
Speaking on Tuesday during the flag-off ceremony of the Second Lagos Traffic Conference an event commemorating LASTMA’s 25th anniversary the governor, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, condemned the rising spate of violence against traffic officers, some of which have led to fatalities.
Sanwo-Olu described the attacks as intolerable, emphasizing that the state would enforce the law against offenders. “We will not tolerate any form of aggression towards our traffic officers. Assaulting LASTMA personnel is a criminal act and will be dealt with accordingly,” he stated.
He also paid tribute to the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, either through mob attacks or hit-and-run incidents, calling their deaths a tragic reminder of the urgent need for stronger protections and greater public cooperation.
The conference, held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, was themed: “Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations.”
