Former Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s dwindling chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that only a miracle can secure the team a spot in the tournament.
Speaking during his first official press conference as the newly appointed General Manager of Kano Pillars, Musa described Nigeria’s current standing in the qualifiers as dire. “Honestly, we are in deep trouble, only a miracle would take Nigeria to the World Cup,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria’s remaining glimmer of hope rests on a pending FIFA decision regarding an eligibility controversy involving Lesotho. Reports suggest that Lesotho fielded two ineligible players, who had accumulated yellow cards in their recent match against South Africa. If FIFA rules in favor of disqualification, the match result could be annulled and the points potentially awarded to Nigeria.
“FIFA is still reviewing the case, and if the points are reassigned, we might just get lucky,” Musa added, while emphasizing the urgent need for reform and discipline in Nigerian football.
The 2026 World Cup is set to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and missing out would mark a major setback for Nigeria, a nation with a proud footballing tradition.
