Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has commended the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for resolving to put aside internal differences and unite for the greater good of the party and Nigeria’s democracy.
Reacting to the outcome of the PDP’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, Saraki said the spirit of reconciliation and compromise displayed by party leaders signaled a new beginning for the opposition party.
In a statement released Tuesday night, Saraki emphasized that the gathering ended with no victors or losers but rather a collective commitment to the future of the party and the nation.
“Today, there was no victor and no vanquished. The winner is the PDP. Another winner is Nigeria’s democracy, because without a vibrant opposition, democracy dies,” he said.
He praised the willingness of leaders to shift positions and make sacrifices, noting that millions of PDP supporters across the country would benefit from the renewed spirit of unity.
Saraki explained that the NEC meeting was particularly significant for two reasons: the leaders’ consensus on the importance of unity and their willingness to engage in honest, give-and-take discussions to resolve long-standing issues.
He described the outcome as “progress,” adding that the momentum must be sustained to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We have disappointed the pessimists,” he stated. “Our commitment is not to destroy the party but to build it into a strong and credible opposition that can offer Nigerians the leadership they deserve.”
Saraki concluded by calling on all party stakeholders to continue working together in the interest of peace, trust, and collective progress, saying the time had come to “forge ahead” with renewed purpose and determination.
