NiMet Forecasts Three-Day Thunderstorms, Rainfall Across Nigeria

The agency warns of strong winds, urges caution from June 15 to 17 across all regions

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thundery and rainy weather conditions across various parts of the country from Saturday, June 15, to Monday, June 17.

In a weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms on Saturday in northern states including Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa, with extended thunderstorms and rainfall expected later in Borno, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.

In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms are expected in Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), followed by widespread rainfall in Kogi, Kwara, and other surrounding states later in the day.

Southern Nigeria will experience cloudy skies with chances of rain in the morning across parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa, with isolated thunderstorms expected across most of the region in the afternoon and evening hours.

Sunday Outlook:
NiMet projected morning thunderstorms in parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba, with rainfall extending to Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi by evening.

Central states such as Kogi, Kwara, and Benue will also witness thunderstorms and rain, while southern states—including Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Oyo—are expected to face moderate to intense rainfall later in the day.

Monday Outlook:
Thunderstorms are expected to persist into Monday across Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Taraba, and Adamawa, with rainfall predicted in the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Plateau.

In the South, early morning rain is likely in Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa, followed by isolated thunderstorms across the region, including Enugu, Ekiti, Lagos, and Cross River.

Public Safety Advisory:
NiMet warned of strong winds potentially preceding rainfall and urged the public to take preventive measures:

Fasten loose objects to prevent damage.

Avoid driving during heavy downpours.

Unplug appliances to prevent electrical surges.

Stay away from tall trees during storms.

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet for safe flight planning.
