TCN Begins Reconstruction of Collapsed Towers on 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has launched the reconstruction of three collapsed towers on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission line, aiming to restore power to affected regions in Kebbi and Kaduna States.

According to a statement released on Saturday by Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, the company has deployed three separate contractors to the site each tasked with rebuilding one tower. This multi-contractor approach is designed to fast-track repairs and ensure the swift restoration of power transmission.

To minimize the disruption to Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric) and its customers, TCN has activated alternative supply routes. Mbah noted that Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi are currently receiving between 6MW and 7MW of electricity via an alternative 132kV line: the Mando-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Talata Mafara-Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi route, powered from the Mando Transmission Substation.

TCN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the reliability and integrity of Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure.

The collapse occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2025, resulting in a major outage that disrupted electricity supply in Kebbi, Kaduna, and neighboring areas. Kaduna Electric confirmed the incident in a statement issued by Abdulaziz Abdullahi, Head of Corporate Communication, and posted on the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
