FG Debunks Viral Salt Advice, Warns Against Health Risks of Excess Sodium

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has responded to growing public concern over a viral video in which a prominent religious leader urges Nigerians to ignore medical advice regarding salt intake.

In a statement released Wednesday and signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the Ministry cautioned against the spread of health misinformation that could jeopardize lives.

While recognizing the important role religious leaders play in shaping public opinion, the Ministry emphasized that excessive salt consumption carries serious health risks.

“Sodium is an essential mineral that supports nerve function, muscle activity, and fluid balance,” the statement noted. “However, excessive intake significantly increases the risk of non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.”

Citing guidelines from the World Health Organization and national health authorities, the Ministry reiterated that the recommended daily salt intake should not exceed 5 grams approximately one teaspoon. Yet research indicates that the average Nigerian consumes more than double this amount, contributing to thousands of preventable illnesses and deaths each year.

To address this public health crisis, the Ministry is rolling out a National Sodium Reduction Strategy. This initiative includes updated national guidelines to limit sodium content across all food sources from packaged products to meals prepared at home, in restaurants, and by street vendors.

The strategy calls for collaboration among food producers, regulatory agencies, and the public to lower sodium consumption without sacrificing taste or nutritional quality.

Importantly, the Ministry emphasized that science and faith do not need to be in conflict. “Both can work hand in hand to promote the health and well-being of our communities,” the statement said, encouraging Nigerians to seek medical advice from qualified healthcare professionals.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to evidence-based public health policies and pledged continued respectful engagement with all sectors of society, including religious institutions, to achieve shared national health goals.
