Sinner Set for Roland Garros Return After Doping Ban Layoff

World number one Jannik Sinner is set to make his Grand Slam return at the 2025 French Open, marking his first major appearance since serving a three-month doping suspension.

The 23-year-old Italian, who tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024, accepted a ban that concluded earlier this month.

The substance was reportedly introduced into his system inadvertently through a massage administered by a member of his support team.

Sinner’s comeback began at the Italian Open, where he reached the final but was defeated by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. As he prepares for Roland Garros, Sinner anticipates a challenging atmosphere, especially in his opening match against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Speaking to reporters, Sinner acknowledged the potential for a less supportive crowd, stating, “It’s definitely going to be different… It’s right that they support the players who are from here”.

Despite the suspension, Sinner maintained his top ranking, a testament to his performance prior to the ban, which included victories at the 2024 US Open and the 2025 Australian Open.

His return adds a compelling narrative to the French Open, especially as the tournament enters a new era following Rafael Nadal’s retirement.

Sinner’s rivalry with Alcaraz is expected to be a focal point, with both players vying for dominance in the post-Nadal landscape.

As Sinner steps onto the clay courts of Roland Garros, all eyes will be on how he navigates the competition and the crowd’s reception in the wake of his suspension.
