Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian, Okey Bakassi, has been conferred with a prestigious traditional title, becoming the king of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State. The popular entertainer, whose real name is Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, was officially crowned as the traditional ruler in a vibrant ceremony steeped in Igbo culture and tradition.
The coronation, which was captured in a video shared by Bakassi on Tuesday, marked a significant new chapter in his life and public service. The actor now bears the royal title His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, the Okwe II of Umuihuocha Obohia.
In the video, Bakassi is seen surrounded by community elders, dignitaries, and cultural dancers, as he is adorned in regal attire and presented with traditional symbols of authority. The event featured music, drumming, and joyful displays of Igbo heritage, as the people of Umuihuocha came out in numbers to celebrate one of their own.
Taking to his Instagram page, the newly installed monarch wrote:
“Special presentation as king (Eze) of Umuihuocha community.”
The brief caption accompanied a video montage of the crowning ceremony, which has since gone viral, drawing congratulatory messages from fans, fellow entertainers, and admirers across the world.
Okey Bakassi has long been celebrated for his contributions to Nigerian entertainment, with a career spanning decades in comedy, film, and television. His ascension to a traditional leadership role reflects not only his standing in the community but also the growing recognition of public figures who give back to society beyond the screen.
The title “Okwe II” suggests he is the second in line to bear that royal name in the community’s history, further cementing the symbolic and cultural weight of the honor bestowed upon him.
As he steps into his new role, His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule is expected to play a key part in preserving cultural values, promoting peace, and supporting development initiatives within Umuihuocha and its neighboring communities.
