Akpabio, Oshiomhole Clash Over Amended Senate Rules Restricting Presiding Officer Contest

During the adoption of Tuesday’s “Votes and Proceedings” (the official record of Senate decisions) in the Nigerian Senate, a disagreement broke out over whether the document accurately reflected what had happened in the chamber.

Senator Godswill Akpabio put the record to a voice vote as required before new legislative business could continue. However, Senator Adams Oshiomhole objected, arguing that the record did not properly capture the actual events of the previous sitting.

Akpabio ruled Oshiomhole out of order, saying the Senate was still on the formal stage of adopting the record and that proper procedures must be followed before raising a point of order. Oshiomhole continued to insist he had a right to speak, leading to rising tension in the chamber.

The Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, also intervened, urging Oshiomhole to respect Senate rules.

At one point, Akpabio warned that any member disrupting proceedings could be asked to leave the chamber if he did not comply. Oshiomhole eventually stopped pressing the issue, and the Senate proceeded with the voice vote, after which the record was adopted by a majority.

The clash came less than a day after the Senate updated its standing rules, including changes to eligibility for presiding officers and adjustments to committee procedures, suggesting the session was already taking place in a tense procedural atmosphere.
