27 States and FCT Access ₦78.6 Billion in UBE Matching Grants by Mid-2025 – FG

The Federal Government has revealed that 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have collectively accessed ₦78.6 billion in Universal Basic Education (UBE) matching grants as of mid-2025.

This figure, shared on Tuesday via the official X account of the Federal Ministry of Education, marks a 65% increase compared to the amount accessed in January 2025.

The surge in funds was credited to the rollout of the UBEC 2025–2030 Strategic Blueprint, which introduced a revised matching grant formula designed to prioritize equity, quality, accountability, and state-specific service delivery in basic education financing.

“The Federal Government records a major success as ₦78.6 billion in UBE Matching Grants accessed by 27 states & FCT by mid-2025 a 65% surge from January!” the ministry’s post stated.

“This milestone follows the rollout of the UBEC 2025–2030 Strategic Blueprint, which emphasises Equity, Quality, Accountability, and State-specific service delivery.”

The increase in accessed funds followed vigorous advocacy campaigns jointly conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). These campaigns involved direct engagement with state governors and data-driven feedback, encouraging more states to fulfill their counterpart funding obligations.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparent reforms and ensuring that every naira allocated yields measurable improvements in Nigeria’s basic education system.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa hailed the progress as evidence of “focused reforms and collaboration,” applauding the states that have taken prompt action while urging others to join the effort without delay.

Back in August 2024, the Federal Government raised the statutory allocation for UBE matching grants from approximately ₦1.3 billion to over ₦3.3 billion per state. With the required counterpart funding from states, this arrangement allows access to a combined pool of around ₦6.6 billion per state.

These funds are earmarked for vital projects including classroom construction and renovation, provision of learning materials, teacher training, and other initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of basic education nationwide.
