Zuma 2025 Showcases Nigerian Cinema as a Global Cultural and Economic Force

The 15th edition of the Zuma International Film Festival (ZUMA 2025) in Abuja reaffirmed Nigeria’s position as a growing force in global cinema. Key industry stakeholders gathered under the theme, “Storytelling for Global Influence: Film as a Soft Power and Economic Force,” to explore how film can drive cultural diplomacy, heritage preservation, and economic development.
Dr. Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), emphasized cinema’s role in shaping perceptions and fostering international partnerships. “Zuma is more than a festival; it celebrates our identity as storytellers and cultural ambassadors. Our stories are influencing global culture more than ever, opening doors for new collaborations,” he said.
Dr. Nuhu highlighted that masterclasses, co-production forums, and business sessions at the festival aim to strengthen Nigeria’s creative value chain from development to distribution.
Obi Asika, Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), reflected on Nollywood’s journey from VHS productions in 1993 to a billion-dollar industry in 2025. “Nollywood was a disruptor in 1992, and it continues to shape global filmmaking. Documenting our own stories is vital, or others will do it for us,” he stressed, praising the festival’s internal jury system for ensuring the integrity of Nigerian storytelling.
Adding an international dimension, Eva Barta, representing the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, highlighted ongoing collaborations between Spain and Nigerian filmmakers. She expressed hope that cultural exchanges and visits would deepen partnerships between the two countries’ film industries.
ZUMA 2025 also featured international participants from China, Germany, Iran, and South Africa, underscoring global interest in Nigerian cinema. The festival concluded with a special screening of “Safari”, an action-packed Nollywood film directed by Obi Emelonye, featuring Ali Nuhu, Jide Kene, and Osas Ighodaro, celebrating the industry’s emerging talent and storytelling prowess.
With discussions on creative partnerships, international collaborations, and Nollywood’s evolving influence, Zuma 2025 highlighted the transformative power of film as both an artistic and economic force.
