“We Used to Pray for This, Now We Hide” — P-Square’s Peter Okoye Reflects on the Price of Fame

Peter Okoye, one-half of the legendary Nigerian music duo P-Square, is opening up about the double-edged sword of fame — the dream that once fueled his ambition is now the very thing he often runs from.

In a candid conversation during a recent interview on Naija FM, the veteran artist reflected on his nearly 30-year journey in the spotlight, revealing how fame has reshaped even the simplest parts of his life.

“We used to pray for this life,” Peter said. “But now, when I go out or travel, I wear a facemask, face cap, and sunglasses — just to avoid being recognized.”

Despite the success, accolades, and loyal fanbase that have come with being part of one of Africa’s most iconic music groups, Peter shared that fame has also come at a personal cost. The once longed-for spotlight has, over time, stolen a sense of freedom and normalcy.

“Back then, we wanted this so badly. We prayed for it. But now, after almost three decades in the industry, I just want to live my life — quietly, freely.”

He shared that one of the most frustrating parts of celebrity life is losing the ability to enjoy everyday pleasures, like stopping by the roadside for hot, freshly made akara (bean cakes), a popular Nigerian street snack.

“There are days I’m driving and I just want to stop and buy akara myself,” he said. “But I can’t. I have to send someone. And by the time they get it and come back, it’s no longer hot. I miss those simple joys — akara and bread, ABC [a local nickname for akara-bread combo], that’s the real burger!”

Peter’s words echo the often-overlooked reality behind stardom — that while fame can bring fortune and admiration, it can also take away privacy, spontaneity, and the joy of everyday living.

His heartfelt reflections are a reminder that behind the glitz, there’s a very human cost to celebrity — and sometimes, all a star really wants is a quiet moment and a warm bite of akara.
